February Messy Church

This month at Messy Church we are starting a new series. Each month we’re exploring a different meals with Jesus. This month while Jesus is having a meal at Simon’s house when a woman pours some VERY expensive perfume over Jesus’ feet. It caused quite a stir. You can read about it in Luke 7: 36-50.

Some questions to think about together:

  • I wonder why the woman poured the perfume on Jesus
  • I wonder what it smelt like
  • How did those at the meal feel about what she did?
  • I wonder why some people seemed angry

Sometimes there is a cost to spending time with Jesus – The woman knew how special Jesus was and how precious it was to spend time with Him.

  • What are some of the things you do (children and Parents) to spend time with Jesus and show Him how special He is to you?

Activities

Paper hanging hearts

Mary annoints Jesus’ feet

Bird Cakes and Cheerios heart bird feeder

You will need:

  • Cheerios
  • Floral wire or pipecleaners
  • Ribbon/string

Shape your wire FIRST. Once the Cheerios are on, it is harder to handle the wire and you are likely to break off the Cheerios!

Thread on the Cheerios. Two on the bird feeder, one in the mouth… ahem. Anyway, they enjoyed the “beading” and threading on all the Cheerios to make their on bird feeders!

Once full, carefully twist the wires together to “seal” the ends.

Add a ribbon/string for hanging and your Cheerios Bird Feeders are done.

Bird Cakes

1. Thread string through the hole in the top of the pot and tie a knot on the inside. Leave enough string so that you can tie the pot to a tree or your bird table.

2: Allow the lard to warm up to room temperature, but don’t melt it. Then cut it up into small pieces and put it in the mixing bowl.

3: Add the other ingredients to the bowl and mix them together with your finger tips. Keep adding the seed mixture and squidging it until the fat holds it all together.

4: Fill your pots with bird cake mixture and put them in the fridge to set for an hour or so.

5: Hang your speedy bird cakes from trees or your bird table. Watch for greenfinches, tits and possibly even great spotted woodpeckers.

You will need:

  • Paint
  • Paper/card
  • Bowl of water/towels

Paint your child’s feet by getting them to stand on the loaded sponges in the tray.

Print them in the heart shape. Put the heels towards the bottom of the heart at an angle to create a footprint heart shape.

Wash the painty feet!!

Guess the smell

  • punch about 5 holes in the top of a cup- one for each smell
  • trim off the rim of the second cups – to put the foods in
  • using your sense of smell see if you can identify each smell – is it sweet, spicy, salty, sour, bitter etc
  • You will need:
  • Disposible paper cups – you’ll need to trim off one for the bottom to hold the ‘smells’ and another one with holes in to put over the top to hid the contents but allow the smell through.
    • banana
    • cinamon
    • lemon
    • ketchup
    • crisps
    • orange peel
    • coffee
    • etc

Things to think about together …

John also recounts a time when Jesus had his feet washed with perfume.

An activity to do outside together!

Dear God,
Thank you that we are never alone because you are ALWAYS WITH US.
Thank you that we can spend time with you and draw close to you.
We pray for those in the world who are feeling alone at the moment
that they would know that you are with them.
Amen

and if you’d like a quieter one to just sit back and let Jesus draw close to you…
