Christmas Messy Church

I know there will be lots of families unable to join us in person this year for our Christmas Messy Church so I’m including as many of the activities here so you can join in from home too.

Our theme for our Christmas Messy Church is Come and See. Come and see what God did that very first Christmas – what it meant to the shepherds – outcasts, nobodies, to be the first to hear the good news of Jesus’ birth. For the wisemen – from another country bringing gifts that help us remember who Jesus was – a king, someone who would point us to God and whose death would change the world. For Mary, a young ordinary girl, who carried the Son of God… Jesus cames for EVERYONE: Emmanuel – God with us.

Static Electricity Christmas Science Experiment

Can you move the shapes without touching them??

You will need: a balloon, some tissue paper

Using the tissue paper cut out some Christmas tree shapes about 5 cm tall

Blow up your balloon and rub it on your head for about 30 sec to build up static electricity.

Hold the balloon above the tissue paper and carefully move it close enough to make the tissue paper shapes rise up, move the balloon around to make them “dance”.  They also fly up and stick directly to the balloon. A little bit of tape on the bottom of the tree will stop it sticking to the balloon.

Baby Jesus in a manger handprint

* Paint your child’s hand with brown paint—make sure the hand is completely covered. Press it in the centre of the printable, to create the straw Baby Jesus will lay in.
* Clean off your child’s hand
* Next, cut out a little baby from some scrap paper to be placed inside the handprint. Colour in, add the face.
* Glue it to the centre of the printable.

* Add the date to the bottom of the poem

  1. Cut two sides off your paper plate to leave a sort of triangle in the middle. The sides will become the angel’s wings and the middle will become the angel’s body. Use the photo as a guide.
  2. Use your hole puncher to make a hole in one end of each wing where it is going to attach to the body. Make a hole in the middle of the angel’s body about an inch from the top of the triangle.
  3. Attach the wings behind the body with a split pin / paper fastener.
  4. Using skin coloured paper cut a circle for the angel’s face and two rectangles for the angel’s arms. Round off one end of each arm to make hands.
  5. Use Sharpie marker pens to draw a face for your angel craft. We made ours with shut eyes and smiles or singing mouths.
  6. Glue the head onto the top of your angel’s body. This will hide the head of the split pin. Glue the arms onto the back of the angel, loop them round to the front and glue the hands down.
  7. To make your angel’s hair wrap your chosen yarn around something multiple times. We used a plastic pot but a small book would work just as well. When you have hair as thick as you would like it, gather the strands together and tie a short piece of yarn around them tightly.
  8. Slide the loop of yarn off of your pot or book. Keeping the tied section at the top cut through all the strands opposite it.
  9. Decorate your angel by glueing on some glitter or any other embellishment you like. We added glitter along the bottom of the dress and to the curved edge of each wing.
  10. Twist your pipe cleaner to make a halo loop. Cut off the excess stem leaving about two inches.
  11. Finish off your paper plate angle craft by glueing on the hair to the top of the head and the halo onto the back of the head.
