Advent 4: Mary

The fourth sunday in Advent is focused on Mary and her very important role in the Christmas Story.

I wonder what you know about Mary

How old was she when the angel visited her?

I wonder how she felt when the angel told her she was going to have a baby.

I wonder how she felt having to make that long journey to Bethlehem.

Lots to think about. You can find the beginning of Mary’s story in Luke 1 verses 26 -56

Older Children may enjoy this version. It will bring out some interesting questions.

Some questions to think about together

  • What is the special present that God gives Mary
  • Mary isn’t the only one with a miracle baby. Can you remember who else had a miracle baby too?
  • How is this going to happen?
  • In verse 38 Mary says ” I am the servant girl of the lord. Let this happen to me as you say.” Why would Mary say this?

Mary’s life was turned upside down. Mary’s story shows us how she trusted God and believed that everything would be all right – even if it would be difficult, even though she must have had so many questions: will Joseph still marry her if she is pregnant? How will she cope when the whole village finds out – will they believe her story? How can she be a good parent to God’s own son when she’s never had a child of her own? In spite of all her questions Mary trusts God.

Where is the worry, the fear, the nervousness or confusion in your life? Can you trust God with it?

Perhaps you could make some angels … here are some ideas.
