Oasis: Disgust

This month the theme for our Oasis service is Disgust.

The journal ‘Jesus and Emotions’ is a really good resource that families can work through together. If you would like a copy please let me know.

Let’s meet DISGUST!

Some questions to think about together

  • What does Disgust usually feel like in your body?
  • I wonder what Disgusts you. I wonder is it the same for your parents?
  • Does the bible say anything about Disgust?
  • I wonder when we should listen to Disgust.
  • What is moral Disgust? How can God use moral Disgust?

We can be disgusted at things that might bring us harm – like food that has gone bad, or things that might bring us harm. We can also feel disgust at the behaviour of others – being rude, unkind, treating others unfairly because of how they look. The bible has some things to say about disgust too..

This is what God said to the people of Israel, through the prophet Amos (5: 21-24), when they were oppressing the weak and the poor:

I’m disgusted by your celebrations, I can’t stand your meetings. Get the sound of your singing away from me! But let justice roll on like a river, truth and right-living like an endless stream!

Amos 5: 21-24

Game

I wonder if you’ve ever played the game ‘hot/cold’. You need to hide something and then get someone else to find it by just giving them the clues ‘hot’ – when they are near the object or ‘cold’ when they are really far away from it. ..

Have a go. I wonder who was the best.

I wonder what you think….

Sometimes we can make God feel like spitting us out when we say we are His friend but our actions don’t say the same.

“I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish that you were one or the other! But since you are like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth!

Prayer

I wonder what things are not just or right. Talk together about what are the things God has placed on your heart.. here are some suggestions.

  • injustice
  • people being unfairly treated
  • the way our planet is being treated
  • the situation in Ukraine
  • poverty

Allow yourself to feel disgusted about the injustice and ask God to change the situation.
