Epic Explorers: Week 1 Sunday 17th Oct

This week sees the children begin a new series called ‘Epic Explorers’. Together we will discover who Jesus is, why he came and what it means to follow him.

There will be some additional resources online that families can access together following our monthly sessions in person.

We’re off on an expedition. I wonder what we might need on our expedition..

Here’s a map of the island we’re going to explore together.

Craft idea

Here’s a craft idea of something you could make at home that might be useful on our expedition.

Binoculars | Safari crafts, Binocular craft, Vacation bible school craft

What you will need:

cardboard tubes, sticky tape, ribbon or string, Paint brushes, hole punch, double sided tape, paint: black, green, brown, yellow

Stick the 2 tubes together using double sided tape.

Stick balck tape around the bottom and top of the tubes

Hole punch each side of the binoculars, close to one end.

Paint the binoculars in a camouflage style.

Thread the ribbon/string through one hole, tie a knot to the inside to hold in place, and thread throughthe other hole. Knot this end on the inside as well.

Game to play

Actions speak louder than words. This game helps us see that the more clues we have the easier it is to identify someone.

Can you help solve Darlington's lollipop crisis? | The Northern Echo
  • They often work long hours looking after people
  • They sometimes perform operations
  • They can help you when you’re ill
  • They have to keep an eye on cars
  • They can stop traffic
  • They help you cross the road
  • They operate hoses and other equipment
  • They have to be able to lift heavy things and climb ladders
  • They can put out fires

Print off the pictures and stick them up around the room. Explain that ofte we can tell who someone is by what they do. Read out the clues one at a time and ask your children to run to the picture they think matches the clues.

When we look at Jesus’ actions we see who he is…… God’s son.

Read Mark 1: 1-34 together.

Jesus heals many people in this chapter – one of them is Peter’s mother in law.

Some questions to think about together

  • What did Simon, Andrew, James and John do, and why was it surprising?
  • How did Jesus show he was more than an ordinary man?
  • Which of the events in Mark 1 do you find the most amazing? Why?
  • Do you think Jesus has just as much power and authority today?
  • What do you think these events have to do with us?
