June 2021 Messy Church

This month we’re looking at the story of Jairus’s daugher. A story about holding onto Jesus when things are really hard. These past 15 months have been really hard and have, at times, really been challenging to have faith. How do we ‘just have faith’ when times are difficult?

As we explore the story of Jairus’ daughter let’s look out for things that can help us hold onto our faith in difficult times.

Virtual sunday school tells the story of Jairus’ daughter with toys – perhaps you could tell the story with your toys too!

The story of Jesus healing Jairus’ daughter helps us focus on Jesus’ love shown through his healing power. Talk together about people you know who are ill and spend some time praying for them together.

You will need to make some playdough to use with your mat.

Here is a very simple playdough recipe that will last for 6 weeks if you keep it in the fridge.

  • 1 cup of plain flour
  • 1/2 cup of salt
  • 2 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • food colouring
  • 1 cup of boiling water

Add all the ingredients in a bowl and mix well.

Obstacle course
What will be in your obstacle course?

Work together with your family to put together an obstacle course outside. You can use garden furniture, tunnels, hoops, trampolines, things to go around, under, over, through. You can use balls to balance, throw at a target….

Think about how Jairus was so desperate to get Jesus to come to his house to heal his daughter. Have you ever been in a situation where everything felt like it was pressing in on you? Maybe you had to really struggle to get through a difficult situation… at school with a difficult subject, or at work…

Trusting God: The amazing water glass trick

You will need: A glass of water (about half- 2/3 filled) and a piece of card.
This is what you do: place the card over the top of the glass, making sure that the whole of the rim is covered by it, and press down.

Hold onto the top of the card with one hand and move your other hand down the glass, towards the bottom of it. Carefully flip the glass upside down, making sure you keep holding the card in place.  You may get a TINY bit of drip page at this point, but don’t panic!  Now slowly move your card holding hand out from underneath and the card should stick, holding the water at bay!

God is such a big powerful God… nothing is impossible for Him.

Sometimes we don’t know what to pray, we find it hard to find the words. It’s ok to say nothing -Psalm 139 tells us that God knows all about us

“You know my thoughts before I think them.
Lord, even before I say a word, you already know it.”

Psalm 139: 2,4

Sometime saying The Lord’s prayer can help. The disciples had asked Jesus to teach them how to pray and Jesus’ response was to give them The Lords Prayer. It can give us words to say when we don’t have any ourselves. It is a beautiful prayer that has everything we need when we pray.

Here’s some familar faces to help us pray The Lord’s Prayer.
