Pentecost Sunday

Today we celebrate the birthday of the Church, also known as Pentecost Sunday. It is the day the Holy Spirit came on the disciples just as Jesus promised. It was a really exciting time for the disciples as the church grew and spread all over the world.

Did you know PENTECOST means 50 in Greek.

What happened on Pentecost Sunday. You can read all about it in Acts 2.

Questions to think about together

  • What is your favourite part of the story?
  • What do you notice?
  • What questions do you have?

Today is also the last part of our story of Elijah. Last week we saw Elijah go up against 450 prophets of Baal to remind the people of Israel that the Lord is God and all powerful. This week Elijah is struggling and we find him alone, afraid and doubting. God is gracious – provides food and leads Elijah to Mount Horeb. There God asks him to stand outside the cave as God is going to pass by. … will God be in the fire? the earthquake? the wind? or something else????

You can read the whole story in 1 Kings 19

  • Why do you think God was not in the wind, earthquake or fire?
  • Why do you think God was in the still small voice?
  • Do you often hear God’s voice? What is it like?
  • What can you do to listen out for God’s voice more?
