Sunday 28th June

The Oasis is our new intergenerational act of worship. Each month we will be exploring a different topic together, asking questions about faith and the Bible, and applying what we learn to our lives.

This month’s topic is:

Fear

“He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” – Deuteronomy 31:8

Opening Question: What are you afraid of?

Feel free to share your fears with others in your family or on Slack!

Song of Worship

The bible is filled with the promises of God. From Genesis to Revelation we see God making promises to his people. When God makes a promise it will come to pass. So we can rest on God’s promises, confident in his faithfulness. All his promises are YES and AMEN!

Reading and Reflection

Psalm 139:1-12 (NIV)

1 You have searched me, Lord,
    and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;
    you perceive my thoughts from afar.
3 You discern my going out and my lying down;
    you are familiar with all my ways.
4 Before a word is on my tongue
    you, Lord, know it completely.
5 You hem me in behind and before,
    and you lay your hand upon me.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
    too lofty for me to attain.

7 Where can I go from your Spirit?
    Where can I flee from your presence?
8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
    if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
    if I settle on the far side of the sea,
10 even there your hand will guide me,
    your right hand will hold me fast.
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me
    and the light become night around me,”
12 even the darkness will not be dark to you;
    the night will shine like the day,
    for darkness is as light to you.

Questions for Discussion

  • Does anything bother you in this Psalm? How does it make you feel?
  • I wonder where you might be in this psalm?
  • Have you ever had an experience like that described in the Psalm?

What Bible verses help you in times of fear or anxiety? Feel free to share them on Slack now, or on Zoom after the service!

Prayers by Lauren, Stella and Elijah using the acronym WhaTSuP... can you work out what each of the letters WTSP stand for?

Song of Worship

Ps 91:4 reminds us: ‘His faithful promises are your armor and protection.’ Lets hold on to all God’s promises when we are fearful, anxious and unsure of the way ahead. God will carry us …safe to shore.

Closing Mediation and Final Prayer

God of perfect peace,
guard our hearts from fear
and our thoughts from anxiety.
Remind us of your great love
and your presence with us always.
For we ask it in the name of Jesus,
our saviour and closest friend. Amen.
